Would you like to work at a stinky fish market everyday?

Imagine coming home each night and smell so bad that no one will come near you except for your cat. It will probably result in a lack of romance to say the least.

So how about it?

Would you want to work at the fish market?

I am guessing not. Why?

Because I am subtly motivating you to think that way.

When it comes to the psychology of human motivation it is simple:

We are motivated away from pain and toward pleasure.

In other words, if you perceive working at a fish market as stinky, disgusting and as a prime reason for a lack of a love life then you are going to be motivated away from working there.

You might be saying, “Well, Billy, who enjoys working at a fish market?” Let me tell you.

As I am writing this, I am on a plane coming home from Seattle to Fort Lauderdale. During my trip to Seattle, I visited the world famous “Pike Place Fish Market”. There you would see a sight you would never imagine. The workers at this particular fish market are enthusiastically throwing large fish, chanting orders in unison and loving every minute of it. Their antics and attitude are so unusual that several business books have been written about them.

Do the Pike Place Fish Market employees associate pleasure or pain with their work? It’s obvious. They associate massive amounts of pleasure with working in a fun, supportive and extremely entertaining environment!

What does this have to do with getting into shape? It is simple. If you consistently look for the good in exercise and eating the right foods then sticking to it will not be a struggle. It will become a journey in which you can enjoy the ride. A positive frame of mind minimizes pain and maximizes pleasure of any circumstance. It’s your choice. You can stop and smell the roses along the way, enjoy the fresh air and admire the bright blue sky or you can neglect all that you are blessed with and be one of those annoying people that suck the life out of others. Make your decision now.

I am serious. Do it or as they say at NASA…

“Do it. Do it right. Do it right now.”

Stay Strong,
